2016 Road Deaths Increased By 10.4% In The US
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated this week that traffic deaths are now at a crisis level, with nearly 18,000 deaths in the first half of 2016, alone.
Whether it’s due to speed, texting, or drunk driving, these unprecedented levels are likely to increase even more with seasonal deaths in the summer. After years of decline, auto crashes increased to 6.3 million in 2015, while injuries from those accidents rose 4.5 percent.
With $836 billion spent in economic loss and societal harm, the NHSTA has a new plan to reach zero road deaths within 30 years. Lowering speed limits, increased and better road signage, and educational programs are just a few of the ways it plans on reaching that goal.
