What Kinds of Injuries Can Result From a Rear-End Motorcycle Accident?

motorcycle accident attorney atlantaPeople who regularly ride motorcycles are well aware of the many positive aspects of riding – for example, they are extraordinarily fuel efficient when compared to cars, they are relatively inexpensive, and can be extremely enjoyable to ride. Unfortunately, there are also downsides with riding, such as the inherent risk of serious bodily injury that riders are exposed to each time they ride their motorcycles. When compared to cars or trucks, motorcycles offer very little protection to riders. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration1 (NHTSA), there were 93,000 motorcyclists injured during 2012, 15-percent more than were injured during the previous year.

One of the most dangerous types of accidents in which a motorcyclist can be involved one in which he or she is rear-ended by another vehicle. In many instances, a motorcyclist who is rear-ended has no advance notice of the impending collision, meaning that he or she cannot take evasive action or otherwise prepare for an impact. As a result, rear-ended motorcyclists can easily be thrown from their vehicles or may even be pinned underneath a vehicle that simply ran over them. Some of the more common kinds of injuries that motorcyclists often sustain in rear-end accidents include the following:

  • Accidental amputations – The immense forces involved in motor vehicle collisions coupled with the lack of protection offered by motorcycles can often result in the accidental amputation of a motorcyclist’s limbs or extremities. In addition, body parts may become crushed or otherwise damaged to the extent that the only course of medical treatment is surgical removal.
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI) – TBIs2 are of one the more common injuries sustained by motorcyclists who are rear-ended by other vehicles. These serious injuries have the potential to result in serious cognitive impairments that could have a significant impact on the quality of a victim’s life.
  • Broken bones – Bone fractures occur when sufficient mechanical force results in a break in the continuity of a bone. The impact associated with a rear-end accident or any secondary impact with the ground or other objects is often enough to cause serious fractures that can be extremely painful and require intensive medical intervention.
